Malcolm Turnbull has spoken to the media. He thanked the party room for voting for him and Julie Bishop, also saying that the party and government owes it to Tony Abbott and his family. He’s said that the Abbott Government has made achievements, such as letting the Syrian refugees into Australia.

He said that it was late – we’re talking 10:50pm – so wouldn’t talk too long. He said the spill is a sobering experience and that people in the Liberal party have been very good today. He then went on to talk about his economic vision that explains the challenges and “persuades not lectures” the public.

Julie Bishop also thanked the media for being out so late and that she is honoured to be serving as deputy under Turnbull and as Foreign Minister. She spoke a bit about Liberal values – especially with reference to Menzies – it didn’t really make sense (it’s late).

They were then asked (among other questions) if they would serve the full term of government to the next election – Turnbull said that they believed they would.
